REP Rami Kashrif Case Study

The Refugee Employability Programme (REP) supports refugees into employment, assists with local community integration and offers Conversation Cafes to enhance English communication. Some other areas we can support with are helping individuals to access services such as GPs, job centres and transport or signposting to community groups or mental health services.

Rami is a REP service user from Doncaster who has progressed significantly since joining the programme.

Rami’s Background

Rami is a 23-year-old from the Dara’a Province in Syria. Once Rami finished high school, it became his responsibility to work and provide for his parents and family. In July 2022, he came over to the UK in search of a better life.

Challenges Faced

After arriving in the UK, Rami encountered numerous challenges as he tried to navigate life in a new country. One significant hurdle he initially faced was the language barrier and he struggled with his English proficiency, having only interacted with Arabic speaking individuals in his home country prior to this.

Rami’s REP Journey so far

When Rami first joined the programme in February 2024 after a referral from his local Jobcentre Plus, his limited English proficiency meant he often struggled to understand instructions. However, with the support of his Employment Advisor, Aseil, Rami’s circumstances began to improve.
Aseil worked closely with Rami, helping him to express himself freely and encouraging him to discuss the challenges he was facing. Aseil also helped Rami open his own bank account and register with a local doctors and dental practice, essentials that many of us take for granted.
Rami expressed his appreciation, highlighting how his life has changed for the better and that Aseil is always just a phone call, or an office visit away if he requires any help or support. He now has a CV, is attending college and inhouse conversation clubs to further improve his English and is actively applying for jobs.

In Rami’s Words

When asked what he would say to other individuals who may benefit from REP’s support, Rami said: “The programme is very helpful, productive, and tailored to focus on everyone’s needs.
“I feel confident and am very happy about the support I am currently receiving”.
